A low and medium volatile coal field mining the Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning seams, the Black Lick Field is located in eastern Indiana County and western Cambria County. Large scale coal mining for export began in the 1890s and peaked in the 1920s and '30s. It continued on a large scale until the 1980s. In the 21st century, coal is still being strip mined and occasionally deep mined in the Black Lick Field, but on nowhere near the scale as the boom years.
