ESTILL, KENTUCKY
Elkhorn coal was mined at Estill by the Salt Lick Coal Company until 1917. Estill was an operaton of the Wells Elkhorn Coal Co. from 1917 until
the 1930s. In 1921 their No. 1 and No. 2 mines at
Estill were in approximately 48" of Elkhorn coal seam. Later, Central Elkhorn Coal Co. operated the Estill coal mines.
I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't also the original Salt Lick Coal Company store.

Defunct United Mine Workers union hall, Estill, KY. As a matter of fact, the United Mine Workers themselves are defunct in the entire state of Kentucky.

An abandoned coal company house that I documented because of its originality. It appears to have been a two familiy house. The multi-pane windows are original, as is
the wood siding and the door on the right side of the house. Even the peeling paint may have been applied by the coal company.
