COALGOOD (MARY HELEN), KY
The Mary Helen Coal Co. opened the Coalgood mines and company town in 1919. In the 1980s the mine was run by Great Western Resources. So there must have been continuous coal mining here for nearly 100 years.
Mary Helen coal camp when it was young. Most or all of these houses are now gone.
The old Mary Helen Coal Company commissary with the coal mine buildings behind it. This is still an active coal mining operation.
One thing that saved this company store is that the Coalgood post office was in it until 2004.
The coal company built this walkway over the railroad so people could walk to church.
View of the church from up on the walkway.
