DAKOTA, WV

This is a small coal camp just beyond the edge of the city of Fairmont on the banks of the Monongahela River. In 1909 a new 90' shaft was sunk into the Sewickley seam of coal. Then this shaft was sunk another 100' to the lower Pittsburgh seam. From 1921 until 1935 Dakota was the No. 42 Mine of Bethlehem Mines Corp., the coal mining arm of Bethlehem Steel.
