CRUMPLER, WV
The tipple that used to exist at Crumpler, WV. It was operated by the United Pocahontas Coal Co.
Another picture at Crumpler from Russell Tilley which he describes as "Empty coal car yard and my grandparents house
at the end of the yard with the mine car bridge crossing overhead of tracks."
These coal miner houses may have been built by Zenith Coal & Coke Co. Zenith began mining coal at Crumpler in 1904. In 1916 Zentih sold the
Crumpler coal mines to United Pocahontas Coal. Co., who finally closed the mines in 1983.
More coal camp houses.
Probably management homes.
Crumpler streetscape.
Maybe this was a boarding house.
These homes don't look like the other company houses.
Abandoned church.
However, this church is still operating. The brick part may have been the Crumpler coal mine office. A 1991 WV historic inventory describes such
a brick building as existing then.
The state historic inventory also showed this tipple remanant that was extant then but gone now.
