SABINE, WV

Sabine was a coal camp serviced by the Virginian R.R. and owned by the Belle-Mead Coal Company, which opened Sabine mine and town in 1940. This is a late date for an Appalachian coal company town to be constructed. There was a company store, but I have yet to see a photo of it. The mine only operated for 13 years, and closed in 1953. The school at Sabine was closed around 1956.

I walked around and looked real hard for remains of the mining operation, but only found reclaimed grasslands and weed-infested railyards.
