Some of the remaining company-built houses in Poland Mines, Monongahela Township, Pennsylvania. Poland Coal Co. owned the mining camp and mine there, and it's the only coal mining town in Greene County that I know of that contained coke ovens.
Chip was kind enough to contribute these photos he took of the remaining coke ovens at Poland Mines. My guess is they were constructed around 1914.
The coke ovens were of the "rectangular" variety, not "beehive" ovens. As the photo shows, the ovens were opened from one side to the other, so a big ram bar
could push the coke out when it was ready for quenching.
